MYSTERY ROAD. REVIEW Mystery Road S2 (E1&2/6) Posted by Andy D on September 20, 2020 October 8, 2020 So after a summer of slim pickings the BBC begins to bring in the big hitters for its autumn season, starting with airing the second series of Australian ‘outback noir’ Mystery Road . An indigenous detective returns to the Outback to investigate the murder of a young girl. Film Review: ‘Mystery Road’ An impressively crafted, immensely satisfying contempo thriller that astutely tackles the hot-button issue of tensions between indigenous and European Australians. More interested in unpicking the broiling tensions of outback Queensland than in tying up the loose ends of his straggle-threaded whodunnit plot, writer-director Ivan Sen (who also shoots, scores and edits) goes walkabout through the minefield of contemporary Australian culture, offering an evocative snapshot of an unravelling crime scene – social, racial and economic. Despite playing out in locations with such evocative names as Massacre Creek, Slaughter Hill and the titular Mystery Road, this atmospheric Australian thriller is closer in tone to the measured, brooding unease of Ray Lawrence's Jindabyne than to the visceral thrills and spills of Greg McLean's Wolf Creek. Both the Stetson and the Winchester rifle that Jay sports nod toward the western template of the lone sheriff cleaning up a hellishly corrupted town, a comparison enhanced by the jutting desert scenery, filmed to resemble some lunar dream of Monument Valley. Mystery Road may be set in modern Queensland but it has the feel of a flinty, slow-burning western as one stetson-wearing lawman stands against an entire community.
